It's rooted in Wahhabism.
Contrary to conflicting reports regarding the reasons behind their attacks on heritage sites, the main reason is to gain attention in the media and convince people to join them. Some of the sites they target, they do so in dispute that those religious grounds are not of their history, therefore useless. However they do in fact inflict little damage on some sites whilst western media accuses them of doing otherwise because it's a much more interesting news story to read that the group have "completely demolished" a world famous and sacred site, creating more fear and attention - which is what the group want anyway. Either way, they win and we all lose.
To win, we have to demote them of any titles, ignore them and stop reporting their actions to people who will be naive enough to believe this group holds any power compared to the likes of the United States, Great Britain, France, Russia, etc. Notice how their actions are reported and cared about more so than the leaders of the said group that have since been killed since the attacks in Paris? Why do people care more so about the actions of these terrorists than the American military who have successfully taken back areas in the Middle East once captured by the group?
