The same backlash occurred in Pussycat Dolls and Destiny's Child.

We're not getting into this game of comparisons because comparing current groups to DC and PCD who obviously had clearly cut lead singers is illogical. Both Little Mix and Fifth Harmony have members who are more famous than the others (Perrie and Camila) but let's be honest, compared to the older groups you mentioned, the solo distribution is much more evenly divided for both. There is no backlash for 5H, their singles are smashing, there's just drama with the most famous member for a myriad of reasons but that's another story.
Back to the OT, I think Little Mix definitely need to change things up if they want to crack America since they've already released all three albums here and none have caught fire. Trying something different with their next era like pushing one member to the front could actually help them since people would have a face and voice to match the group with instead of feeling unsure of who to focus on among 4 girls they're unfamiliar with. Jade is the member the American GP would respond best to because she's very sweet and cute but has a distinctive voice. Let's be real, if they pushed Jesy as the leader, well

Tyra's not gonna go there.
