There is a reason why the Western world countries were more ambitious in their colonisation and it's called the weather / fertility of those regions which is conducive to prosperity.
More fertility = more food = more energy = more colonisation.

Since when did fertility become a factor? if that's the case could you explain why Indonesia,Egypt,India, china and most of east asia, whom had great civilisations till colonisation and boom there history, jewellery, art were plundered. They have seriously fertile soil and conducive weather, you cant say California,Florida, northern Canada is what you call conducive weather in comparison to this countries. The guy above was right, many factors come into play for different developing countries, especially after colonialism. If you want to bring weather,it may apply to some sub Saharan African countries(where colonisation opened up those regions to development on a different scale but still weather sounds ludicrous, cause other factors like culture,do affect out of the box thinking).Equally in the the contemporary world, economies of scale come into play.
