Lol maybe not like a white person but black people can turn pale too. But anyway it doesn't matter. Hermione is a fictional character. And her being a black woman in a PLAY is not something to be pissed about. I'm a huge fan of HP and even I know it's not a big deal. Emma Watson was the face of the movies, not the books

Right. It's a play not even the majority of people complaining will see. Its nonsensical.

Meh. She's just mad because her fans exposed her of the retcon.
Honestly if she just said the black actress was the best Hermione they could get for the job, most of her fans aren't gonna be frying her. That's canon and Hermione's white. She just tryna he clever but she got busted for telling lies.

Theatre is different to film and there's nothing wrong with having Hermione being black. I've also seen the show and she's superb in the role. You completely believe she's Hermione from the first line she speaks.

I don't think I mentioned ATRL at all in that post

You mentioned "us" which alludes to the posters on this board. My generalization was about the detractors, all of them, all over the internet. I was just letting you know that my generalization is based off what I've seen across all social media platforms, as you seem to have thought it was based of the comments of ATRL users.

Come on, what's the big deal ? Being white or black isn't a relevant part of the Hermione's character anyway, what will it change ? Being played by an asian, black, or middle eastern girl Hermione is Hermione

To the people drawing attention to Rowling's use of white face in reference to Hermione - Is English your native tongue?
Because it's a pretty common expression that has nothing to do with race.

We aren't talking about Rowling and what she thinks, it's about what's in the books and how fans perceive the character.

Are you following the discussion? No one is arguing that Hermione must be black, but that her racial identity was left up to the interpretation of any reader.
What this means is that there is just as much of an argument for Hermione being a woman of color as there is for her being white.

By 'us' I mean the ones complaining about this. And even if you see quite a few white people on social media complaining about it compared to other races, it still doesn't mean its almost exclusively them.
----
And of course we have the right to voice our opinions now that we're being called racist for this

The two book covers and other illustrations show her being white. No, JKR didn't create them, but she had to approve them. If she wanted the character to be racially ambiguous she should've declined the illustrations and ask for each one to show her being a different race, or to not clearly show her race at all.

The fact is, Hermione would have never been black in the movies or the book cover for commercial reasons. As much as JK Rowling might have protested this, the publishers would have categorically refused. Even when there was a black character in the book, the casting directors choose a white woman to play the role, despite the fact that she had been black throughout several of the movies, up until the point when the character had some lines and a larger role to play.

Well, yeah but if she doesn't have any race per say, she can be pictured as white in the books cover, and be played by a black woman in a play Don't see what the big fuss is about.

I think it does show ambiguity because the illustrations are in black and white

I'm glad she's speaking out. The only people who would have a problem with this are ignorant racists. And BYE @ the whitewashing argument because there will always be roles for white people, but minorities rarely get leading roles such as this. Go Rowling.

No, she doesn't, as I explained in the other thread.
She signed a book deal with a publisher who is is responsible for producing and selling her books (which includes commissioning artwork!).
Where did you all get this idea that that the author must approve? Do you realize how many markets her books were sold in with different covers? You think she signed off on every single version?
You've run out of excuses. There is no indication of Hermione's race outside of your own assumptions. The end.

I'm not really looking at it in a racial way, but more in how she looks appearance-wise. I wouldn't care if she wasn't white but still had the appearance of Hermione in the books/movies.
But yes, it's not the end of the world that this decision has been made. We just wanted to explain why we did not like the decision, that it's not racism/ not because she is black but because it's not the Hermione we grew up with.
