The US is holding its 58th Presidential elections. Since there are 2 "major" candidates every election, that's 116 Presidential nominations.
Hillary is on her way to be the first candidate nominated by one of the 2 big parties.
If the U.S. is a meritocracy, you are implying that for every 117 capable men, there is 1 capable woman.
And if you say that that's because women have historically been discriminated against, but it's all equal now, well, the current Congress is still < 20% female, and elections to that body were held in the past few years.
