The idea of the afterlife being developed as a result of fear of death is nothing more than a genetic fallacy. It couldn't have been conceived for that reason especially when theistic religions teach the idea of hell and most people ending up there, and eastern religions have reincarnation which basically means never-ending suffering. One of the biggest misconceptions people have especially about reincarnation is that they think it is a positive aspect when Hinduism and Buddhism actually teach that reincarnation/rebirth should be avoided, and moksha/nirvana or basically nonexistence is what one should ultimately aim for.
