As 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse stormed theaters over the long weekend, critics took aim at billboards featuring Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse choking Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique.
Among them was Rose McGowan, who elaborated on a May 25 Facebook post to THR: "There is a major problem when the men and women at 20th Century Fox think casual violence against women is the way to market a film. There is no context in the ad, just a woman getting strangled. The fact that no one flagged this is offensive and frankly, stupid. The geniuses behind this, and I use that term lightly, need to to take a long hard look at the mirror and see how they are contributing to society. Imagine if it were a black man being strangled by a white man, or a gay male being strangled by a hetero? The outcry would be enormous. So let’s right this wrong. 20th Century Fox, since you can’t manage to put any women directors on your slate for the next two years, how about you at least replace your ad?"
It's a blue Jennifer Lawrence. Portraying the same character she has for years now. All the promos have her being choked in them, why is this a problem? It's not portraying domestic abuse. He is a Godly mutant fighting another mutant. Her sex isn't of importance to him. She's being held in such a way because of the impact/influence she has on characters in the film. She is a powerful mutant and factor in the film.
I think she's doing the most but really, they could put plenty other pics than this specific one. It's just a film, I know... But it looks a bit agressive!
She's a strong mutant and he's the villain. You can swap her for any male mutant and he would still brutally strangle the person in question, cause that's how super villains and heroes interact. It's not like if there was a guy, he'd be giving him a pat on the back.
It's hardly "casual" violence. There is a lot of interesting stuff to discuss about the representation of women in superhero universes (such as the really tragic "Women in Refrigerators" trope), but the fact she chose to isolate a billboard pic which shows a super villain interacting with his enemy/enemies in the normal way speaks volumes about her not having much to discuss.
Its ****ing X men a movie where its known that there will be fights and violence now if this was a romantic comedyand that was the billboard then youd be like wtf but this is ****ing X men everyone knows what X mens about wtf don't play dumb.
