India the only country where both Lions & Tigers are found
Wildlife: Why is India the only country where both lions and tigers are found in their natural habitat?
Asiatic Lions:
Quote:
Asiatic Lions were once widely distributed in Asia Minor and Arabia through Persia to India. In india, the range extended over northern India, as far as east up to Bihar, with the Narmada river marking the southern limit.

Over centuries ,these lions have been poached extensively and has been put into "extinct" category throughout the rest of the world except in Gir (gujarat) where its population once reached onto the brink of extinction but fortunately bought back to life by conservation efforts initially by the nawab of Junagarh and later by the British(In the year 1913, the Chief Forest Officer of Junagadh reported that there were not more than 20 animals in the Gir Forests ).
After independence, relentless efforts by GOI and unprecedented cooperation by the people of Gujarat especially by Maldhari people ensured that the last genes of Asiatic lions suffer minimum consequences due to the exploding human population, rapidly disappearing jungles and indiscriminate urbanization.Thankfully ,we now have 523 of them.
The jungles of Gir provides them enough food and space for mating though sometimes you might see some of them exploring outskirts of the forest.

Tigers:
In the beginning of the 20 th century there were around 100,000 tigers spread from Persia to China. Past 100 years have seen 95 % reduction in tiger population owing to Poaching ,habitat loss , man-animal conflict and tiger-tiger conflict.
*People in China prefer to see a dead tiger lying on their sofas rather than see him roaring in the wild.Bad luck.

In all other countries tigers are either been eliminated completely(Persian,Javanese and Balanese) or are on the brink of elimination( other 6 subspecies ).But Tigers in India performed better .Thanks to Project Tiger ,which started in 1972 , was a revolutionary step towards tiger protection. Along with govt intervention, the pro-active role of Media,NGOs and people of India protected this charismatic megafauna from disappearing. Count conducted in 2015 showed a 30% increase in their numbers with 2226 of them roaring proudly in India.
Lions were found in India and to the west of India upto the west corner of Africa
Tigers were found in India and to the east upto Indo-China and Sumatra (and on Sino-Russian order)
Interesting, I wasn't aware that lions existed in India not so long ago.
Could it be because it's the only place where climates are good for both of them? Perhaps in India they could coexist because they were able to have different niches...
The world’s most endangered tiger, the South China tiger, has walked our earth for 2 million years and is the root ancestor of all tiger subspecies, yet tragically, it is on the brink of extinction. About 100 remain, mostly in captivity. As an apex species, protection of the tiger means protection of its prey and a complete bio-diverse, balanced and protected ecosystem.
In partnership with the State Forestry Administration of China, the Chinese Tiger Project and its team of scientific advisors have developed an innovative big cat rewilding model to re-wild zoo-bred tigers, implemented productive breeding techniques, restored eco-systems on a landscape scale; and laid the foundations for the tigers’ reintroduction into its historic range in China.
Save China’s Tigers is a group of charities, working with partners such as the National Wildlife Research and Development Center of the Chinese State Forestry Administration, the Chinese Tiger South African Trust, Laohu Valley Reserve and Conservation Finance International to conserve the South China tiger and its habitat.
Wow thanks for posting this story about these precious animals. So sad that they have such small limited area these days. I applaud India for doing their best to conserve some of these special beasts and give them their space.
