Well that's what most people do. It's usually for high schoolers and college students. However, the majority of the population rely on entry level positions for main source income.
Why is there a hierarchy on customer service positions? There are a lot of factors that go into working/managing a restaurant..and way more intense customer service situations than a regular customer service desk job.
I agree with Dessy, there should be a base of around $10 and working up.
Also, those "losers" in your school probably had no choice BUT to work to help pay for their education. Which the VAST majority of the United States is doing right now.
