This is very obviously the reason why Anti had a "better" chart run since it's sold significantly less than ARTPOP!

But which is it tho?
Because i've seen people say that releasing in Q4 is better than releasing in Q1, resulting in why Rihanna has released most of her albums in Q4.
Even when ANTI was released people still predicted her to have a short chart run...

Justin Bieber has had to do so much grovelling to get back on the side of the GP, and add that to the multiple promo he has done, and how commercially friendly his album is, it's not surprise.
Beyonce is near to a phenomenon also, she has consistently sold more than Rihanna and most pop artists. No surprise there.
Drake is also huge right now! Though a bit off topic seeing as we're talking pop girls, no?
|
So what I'm seeing is that Katy, Gaga, Taylor, Beyoncé, and Adele's latest eras have all outsold Anti, yet Rihanna deserves the 5th main pop girl spot over Gaga?

Releasing in Q4 - better for initial sales, because people are doing Christmas shopping.
Releasing in Q4 also typically results in a shorter run in the Billboard top ten unless you can sell a lot of albums consistently throughout Christmas.

If we're strictly looking at commercial success, not GP impression/impact or critical success then yes they are similar in many ways. Artpop is underrated in that sense. But the other factors outweigh this and that's what makes it less successful.

The only difference between Anti and ARTPOP is that Anti has a #1 hit (which was fueled almost entirely by free YouTube and Spotify streams and radio airplay, not sales).
Metacritic is not a factor in what makes an era bigger commercially. (And for what it's worth, Anti wasn't even acclaimed; it just got mostly above average reviews.)

I don't understand why someone would call Adele a pop girl. By all means she's maybe an alternative pop girl who blew up. If Lorde ever released another album she'd be more in line with her than with anything Katy, Rihanna or Gaga have to do with her.
Beyoncé I'm on the fence about calling a pop girl since she seems to be so much more above that. While Gaga and Katy have been off the charts for two years now I'd say the pop gals would be Rihanna, Taylor and maybe Ariana. But that's only because the others have gone recurrent.
Actually hesitant to call Ariana a pop girl, she's more in line with Demi and Selena still on a tier below true pop stardom

Adele is not alternative. She doesn't make bubblegum or dance music like most of her peers, but most of her repertoire consists of pop ballads and a few uptempo pop-rock songs.

Its seventh week would have been right around Christmas. LOL. Competition. Gaga had tons. Rihanna had very little. Timing is 100% a factor here, especially since even with it dipping to #60 or whatever it was so quickly, it's sold more than Anti.

Even though it was #1 just because of streaming (lies) it still managed to be the biggest hit of the year (so far). Are sales really that important now?

So every #1 hit released from now on is going to be fueled by spotify and youtube then, surely? Rih isn't the only artist in the streaming era.
I already separated critical from commercial success, and it is still more acclaimed than 4/5 of Gaga's releases so, while not the best score, is still much more impressive than 61.

Adele is NOT Alternative. She's Soul/Pop/R&B.

Stop with the streaming excuse. Justin Timberlake sold nearly 400k copies of his latest single first-week, an improvement on Suit & Tie (which was a 2013 release - just like ARTPOP).
Believe it or not, some artists can still sell in the streaming era. Gaga is one of them, which is why she deserves the 5th spot in this poll and Rihanna doesn't.

Adele has four Hot 100 number ones and works with Greg Kurstin and Max Martin, you guys. She's a pop girl.

You keep bringing up artists/albums which were very commercially friendly. Like Max Martin pop songs/album (CSTF, 1989), other mainstream sounds (Purpose, Views), and ARTPOP was another EDM album, which was very mainstream also.
ANTI, aside from Work and Needed Me, has no commercially friendly songs.

Lmao at these Gaga stans still arguing Artpop is bigger than Anti
You guys are in for a big surprise when LG5 comes if you think 2013 sales are comparable to 2016.
