A teenage boy has undergone surgery to remove a foetus, complete with hair, legs, hands and genitals, from his stomach.
The Malaysian boy was suffering from foetus-in-fetu, an extremely rare condition that is estimated to occur only once in every live 500,000 births.
Only about 200 cases of the condition have ever been medically reported and they are usually detected in infancy.
In this case 15-year-old Mohd Zul Shahril Saidin had been carrying the growing foetus since birth, according to Central European News.
The boy, from a family of eight children, was only taken to hospital after complaining of pain in his stomach in recent months. The teenager's family was shocked by the discovery of what was causing his discomfort.
"The foetus removed from my son's stomach was formed with organs like those of a baby – only the nose and mouth were not complete," his mother Hasmah Ahmad told CEN.
The surgery was performed in the Sultan Abdul Hamid Hospital in the north-western Malaysian state of Kedah. It was considered a success and the teenager is recovering well in hospital.
Hasmah said she and her family performed funeral rites for the foetus following its removal and it is now buried in a cemetery in Sungai Petani.
It is not clear what causes foetus-in-fetu or vanishing twin, but it is known it happens in the very early stages of foetal development.
Usually a CT scan following birth will diagnose the condition and surgery to remove foetal twins has been performed on babies as young as three months.
