Chopra landed the cover of Complex, which was revealed on Monday (May 23), and she talks about the struggles she's faced while in America, starting with her schooling. She left India at 13 to study in Massachusetts, but encountered a memorable bully that made her eventually choose to return home:
“I was bullied by a freshman named Jeanine. She was black, and supremely racist. Jeanine used to say, ‘Ugly brownie, go back to your country, you smell like curry and look like a monkey,’ or ‘Do you smell curry coming?’ while I walked down the hall every day. You know when you’re a kid, and you’re made to feel bad about where your roots are, or what you look like? You don’t understand it, you just feel bad about who you are and don't want to wake up in the morning.”
sad that someone as pretty as her had to go through that !
i never really saw it for her music career in the US but i hope she pops off with acting rolls, she slays
well she is already one of the biggest actress in india (a country of 1.2 billions) and is slowly getting popular worldwide as well with her stint in hollywood now.
There's a difference between racism on a personalised scale and racism on a systematic scale. Some people can't comprehend the difference between the two it seems.
