This is ridiculous and borderline offensive.

"Gay icon" as a phrase is not something to be compartmentalized, something to be divided into "easily recognized or emblematic of something" and separately "somehow connected to the LGBT community." That you think it means this is the first offense.

The phrase means someone who is a symbol of or for the gay community such that LGBT individuals can find strength in them. It is someone like Judy Garland, whose enduring legacy and image and whose defense of her gay fans means something to them. It is not a serial murderer who has tenuous connections to that community.

Furthermore, I would dispute their inclusion in this community at all, on the grounds of their inclusion being based on victims rather than lovers. They tortured and murdered a collective 50 men and boys, at minimum. That is disgusting. That is directly at odds with human nature itself, with the concept of gayness as an expression of love toward someone of the same gender, and with what we celebrate as a community.

I have half a mind to close this thread because it is so ignorant of these things, but I may keep it open only because I believe in dialog and discussion. Know, however, how remarkably and deeply disturbing I find this question.
