I think it's kinda a big clue here that Gamefreak is deliberately doing the opposite of what the general fans want.

The fact that we got a sequel to B/W instead of a third version. Then Gen 6 only had the remakes and no third version.

I wonder if maybe the third version thing is something they're choosing to stop doing.

They did say they want to tie up XY in a unique way. It still could be it.
With the inclusion of the backpacker (who i am pretty sure is hinting towards Alola especially since he gives you a tiki) in XY it makes me think S&M has been in development or at least in the planning stages since before XY was done.
