Jamala, whose real name is Susana Jamaladynova and is herself a Crimean Tatar, has not been home since shortly after Russia’s 2014 annexation of the peninsula, but her parents and extended family still live there.

Jamala’s song begins: “When strangers are coming, they come to your house, they kill you all, and say, ‘we’re not guilty, not guilty’”.

“Of course it’s about 2014 annexation as well,” she said. “These two years have added so much sadness to my life. Imagine, you’re a creative person, a singer, but you can’t go home for two years. You see your grandfather on Skype who is 90 years old and ill, but you can’t visit him. What am I supposed to do: just sing nice songs and forget about it? Of course I can’t do that.”

But I agree, it's so sad what's happening there. It feels like the world has forgotten about Ukraine now that the US and Russia aren't at each other's throats over Crimea anymore.
