Omg I just read up on Venezuela crisis last night and I am so terrified.
Is it really that bad there? I have plans on going there as part of my south america trip next year but mess

Can someone enlighten me about the real situation there?

South America in general is not safe. There's plenty other better, safer places in the world why would you even think of going there. They always have the weirdest viruses like zika etc.

Venezuela has the 2nd highest homicide rate in the world. Latin America in general is actually the world's most violent region.

The only places that are not dangerous in South America are Argentina, Uruguay and Chile. Brazil is great but only stay in the places where all the tourists are, a lot of pickpocketing and violent robbers. Peru is a great choice too. (The food is excelent). Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela..

Let's make this clear.

We're going through the worst situation we've ever been through, but come on, we're not killing for food (yet), and we really hope we don't get to that point. BUT in this country, as of now, if you want to eat, you have to make very long lines to buy food, in case you find it. Believe me, very long lines. And that's a torture for people, a few people have even died while waiting to buy food. See it here, so the situation is not good at all in this country.

We have the biggest inflation of the entire world and the trash government only keeps making it worse each time with their stupid decisions.

Most of the rest of South America is doing good. Some of them ha've reached their peaks yet last year, and I'm happy for them.

Venezuela is not safe for a tourist to visit.

But there are plenty of other beautiful, safe places to visit in South America. I live in Argentina and would recommend a visit!

Chile, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, southern Brazil and Uruguay are also all perfectly safe to visit - and you should!

Just came back from Venezuela! I won't sugar-coat anything, it is dangerous, plain and simple. But I was born there and grew up part of my childhood there, so I am pretty streets-smart when I go, I know where and where not to go, etc. Caracas is by far the most dangerous, but you can still enjoy certain areas which are relatively more high-end such as Prados del Este, La Castellana, El Hatillo. I am not as familiar with Caracas tho since I am from Maracaibo, which still has much crime (more drug-trafficking), just not as much as Caracas since it is the capital city and largest.
But all in all, Venezuela is such a beautiful country and it suffers from high crime rates such as many other Latin American countries do. My best recommendation is to stay clear from quiet, dark places at night, obviously, always be around many other people, and do NOT wear expensive looking clothing or jewelry, try to blend in as much as possible.

I live in Venezuela and no, it's not safe, I fear for my life and that of my loved ones all the time, this kind of stress is horrifying to cope with, if it's not the rampant delinquency, a disease will kill you because there are literally no medicines.

Be very careful if you are planning to visit this country.

You shouldn't speak about things you don't know. We don't have weirdest viruses. We only have Zika now and that could happen to any country. The problem is that a lot of Latin countries doesn't have a good healthcare system, so things get worse here if you compare to Europe or US.
