What is Cancon? Call Me Maybe smashed in Canada ages before the rest of the world, yes?

this era would've been successful if it went
Emotion
Let's Get Lost
Warm Blood
When I Needed You
the worst songs were chosen as singles therefore it's unsuccessful. The same thing happens with most pop releases and the labelheads wonder why the eras aren't successful

Let's Get Lost and Warm Blood are two of the worst on the album though.

CanCon is a requirement for radio to play a certain percentage of Canadian Content.
Unfortunately, Carly's recent material didn't qualify for some reason so she wasn't played here even though she is Canadian. It was a dumb loophole.
And yeah CMM was a hit here a couple of months before it reached the rest of the world, but it continued to be a huge hit even after all those weeks.

For those that don't know, Canadian radio must play a certain percentage of Canadian Content. To qualify as Canadian Content, a song needs to pass TWO of the following:
M (music) — the music is composed entirely by a Canadian
A (artist) — the music is, or the lyrics are, performed principally by a Canadian
P (performance) — the musical selection consists of a performance that is:
Recorded wholly in Canada, or
Performed wholly in Canada and broadcast live in Canada.
L (lyrics) — the lyrics are written entirely by a Canadian
The only songs on EMOTION that count as Canadian content are: LA Hallucinations, Warm Blood, and I Didn't Just Come Here to Dance. (EDIT: I just realized it says it must be written entirely by a Canadian.... so IDK if these do pass. But somehow Good Time passed CanCon)
IRLY should also count as CanCon since it was performed live at the MMVA's last year.
Your Type may now pass CanCon, if the Hedley tour performances count along with when she sang Your Type live on some late night shows which were also broadcast in Canada... but that would mean that RAWM would now pass CanCon as well, so why did they choose to play Your Type? Since Carly is touring Canada, I'm scared that radios are just playing the song because she's visiting them, and will drop it soon if it doesn't meet CanCon requirements.

Thank you very much to you both for the info.
If a song doesn't pass CanCon, that doesn't mean they won't play it though, does it? It's just less likely because they don't have to?

doesn't carly's team have to apply the song to be CANCONNED though? like the radios don't declare it themselves

Music Canada needs to have the CanCon section in their website so we can check
I'm praying it really passed Cancon I'm not sure if it passed, because the whole broadcast thing is confusing we can only hope for the best. if it continues to rise then it's definitely passed

They won't play it then, unless it starts being a hit in the US, because Canadian radio is just a copy cat of them
Today's positions:
#38 on Pop (=)
#42 on Hot AC (=)
#40 on AC (=)

Girls this wouldn't have even made it to 38 if it wasn't CanCon. Be real.

Hopefully she can chart on the Emerging Canadian Artist chart and we'll see if they put a Canadian Leaf beside it in this report: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/..._May4_2016.pdf (Page 5)
Songs that don't meet CanCon (I Know What You Did Last Summer) won't have a leaf beside the title.
I don't know what counts as "emerging" though... The Weeknd and Shawn Mendes are charting despite huge success, whereas Drake isn't.
EDIT: Mess nevermind, she's not emerging
"Artists are considered emerging until 36 months after the date their first Canadian Hot 100"
Will have to wait for this to actually chart on the Hot 100 to know for sure.

The problem is, that if a song does not pass cancon, Canada will never play it UNLESS it smashes in the US. Because other then the local Cancon songs, Canadian Radio copies US radio almost entirely.
