My brother started his laptop and he only gets a black screen with a cursor...........

Could be Driver update problems.

turn your PC off.. unplug every single cable (USB or LAN) bar the one for the display. turn it on and wait at least 15 minutes. If the Log In Display shows up you can plug everything in again - if that works you should search for updates for your drivers.

Is the cursor zoomed up? I had this problem and was only able to see a portion of the screen, thats why you only see a black screen and the cursor.
