Scientists have managed to cultivate a human embryo in a petri dish for twelve days. Usually the fertilized eggs are placed into a womb very soon after conception, since it was assumed they need the environment to develop further. Scientists have succeeded at simulating the conditions in a womb and the embryo developed the same as in an actual womb for the first ten days. On day twelve development came to a stop.
Researchers are looking into the possibility of using this new technique to examine why some women keep miscarrying and why IVF treatment doesn't succeed for some women.
