I live in the US and traveling to Europe for 3 weeks alone next week. I'll be in London, Paris, Barcelona and Lisbon.
Any tips? And how do I start a conversation in non-English speaking countries? Should I say ask people whether they speak English (in their language) first?
I'm so excited, but also a bit freaked out. I'll be alone, and it's my first time in Europe.

Good luck getting around Paris if you dont know French, Parisians will not be inclined to help you in anyway if you dont speak French.. the subway systems in Paris is confusing as hell too.

In Spain & Portugal, language shouldn't be a problem. When I visited Barcelona 4 years ago, everyone knew English.

English shouldn't be a problem in Barcelone. The majority of the population in there doesn't know how to speak english, but the people that matters (waiters, receptionists, policemen, young people) will. If you buy any Spanish souvenir like a flag, a bull statue or something like that, do not expose it that much because some people will make fun of you in there.

Hm is it because Spanish flag and the bull are symbols of Spain (not Catalonia) or because it is such a touristy thing to do?

You can get by easily with English. It's spoken all over Europe. Doesn't mean everyone speaks it perfectly or will be 100% as helpful as you are used to, but you'll be fine

It would probably be polite to ask if they speak English first. You don't have to but they are more likely to warm to you and help out.

Most of the people in major cities speak English, especially young people. However, in France.. Paris is a beautiful city though, and you should visit it! The highlights aren't hard to find and the subway system isn't that hard, no worries

I would also recommend planning things well before going, I don't know what you're going to do, but websites often offer cheaper tickets online. Good luck and most of all have fun!

The language could only be a problem in Paris, not a lot of people speak english there.

For me the most important thing to do when I travel is to buy a new sim card in every country to have unlimited data there, it's super useful for translating, using public transport, getting tips of nice places near-by to go, etc.
