Student Samantha Niemann is suing the Getty Foundation, claiming she was denied an internship because she is white. She has filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against the Los Angeles-based organization (pictured) and accused them of violating her civil rights

Eligibility
Students must:
• Be of a group underrepresented in museums and visual arts organizations, including, but not limited to, individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, or Pacific Islander descent;
• Be currently enrolled undergraduates. Students must have completed at least one semester of college by June 2016. Students graduating in May or June 2016 are also eligible. (Students who are enrolled in a second BA or BS program are not eligible.)
• Reside or attend college in Los Angeles County; and
• Be a United States citizen or permanent resident.

Even so, there's a reason there's grants and internships for minorities only. She can always apply elsewhere plus she SHOULD have read the guidelines. No basis for a lawsuit here.

It's an equal opportunity for those who can't get the same thing elsewhere.

As a Native American, I'm grateful we have these kind of exclusivity since Lord knows there's problems in getting Native Americans into college much less actually graduate college.

i actually don't support affirmative action and i think it causes more problems than it fixes (although i think the real ones who get shafted the most are asians, not white people, because of college admissions), and that there are much better ways of trying to help these problems.

and i do think this policy is pretty blatantly unfair, but i don't think it's very common in other places, so i don't see how it really means much. (and really, it's not like there's only one company that offers internships in the entire world, so i don't see why it's worth a lawsuit)

So all interns at the Getty are non-white? I'd like to see a breakdown of the racial makeup of the interns. Usually when programs like this exist, it's because there is a shortage of minorities and the organization wants to increase diversity.
