I believe he married young and also joined the army young. He went to Afghanistan in the past. He and his wife divorced some time after he joined the military.

When you read about some of the worst serial killers in U.S. history they have that in common (being married for some time and/or being in the military). Must be that they have violent tendencies that they hope to repress by having some sort of discipline in their lives.
