Okay, your ignorance is showing.
Conan was given the reigns to THE TONIGHT SHOW. THE ****ING TONIGHT SHOW! Only four people had hosted the show before Conan. I mean, The Tonight Show is an institution, for crying out loud. The fact that they were going to move Conan back a half hour to make way for his predecessor tells you three things:
1) As Letterman has pointed out, it wouldn't be "The Tonight Show" anymore. It would be "The Tomorrow Show".
2) NBC had no confidence in Conan to make his own identity and create another new fan base for a long period of time.
3) NBC realized that they COMPLETELY ****ed up with "The Jay Leno Show", and are reaping the consequences for the move.
People are bashing Leno for this, but this is 110% NBC's fault. It was their stupid idea to cut Conan's momentum at the knees by bringing Leno back at 10pm, and it's now their even more stupid idea to put Leno back at 11:35 and get rid of Conan.
The worst part is that NBC HAS DONE THIS BEFORE. Not quite on this scale, but NBC shafted Letterman, when he was clearly the true successor of Carson's Tonight Show, the man groomed to take the job, and NBC shafted him for...what do you know, JAY LENO! But that doesn't even compare to giving Conan the Tonight Show, only for NBC to completely **** Conan over and give him no chance in hell of establishing his own Tonight Show. It's Letterman/Leno, multiplied by 100, and to make the argument that this is, somehow, CONAN's fault is just...it's ridiculous, even for ATRL.
