Chernobyl disaster 30th anniversary
Exactly 30 years ago
Quote:
Ukraine is marking the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, which permanently poisoned swathes of eastern Europe and highlighted the shortcomings of the secretive Soviet system.
In the early hours of April 26, 1986, a botched test at the nuclear plant in then-Soviet Ukraine triggered a meltdown that spewed deadly clouds of atomic material into the atmosphere, forcing tens of thousands of people from their homes.
A memorial service is being held at the town of Slavutych, which was built to re-house workers who lived near the nuclear plant, and a church service will be held in Kiev for the families of victims.

I read an article about it yesterday, and last night I had a nightmare about dying from nuclear fallout

I'm watching a documentary about this and it's very interesting. Didn't know you could visit it, though. I might one day.

I've read a lot about that incident and the whole thing though it's very sad, it's fascinating. I'd love to go there some day (Hoping I don't have to get through the same as the people from the movie)

Story time!
I was actually in eastern Poland when this happened. Not like we knew what happened tho. It was warm those days, like a nice summer day, t-shirt and short weather.
Randomly we get the message, don't remember if it was on national TV or how this came about, (I was a child back then) that everyone below age 12 should go to the hospital the next day. Nobody told us why, what they were gonna do to us or anything.
So my cousin took me into town, bus full with children and their mothers all heading into the same direction. In the city at the hospital there was a big queue of children all waiting for their turn.
We got called in by 4-5 at the same time. Got sat down, and the nurses brought us this suspicious yellowish golden drink in a plastic container. I was told to chug it in one go, and remember, we still didn't know why.
I remember this so vividly to this day cause it was still till this day the most disgusting thing I ever drank. We weren't allowed to eat or drink anything till 2 hours later and that taste in your mouth was just so gross, still sends shivers down my spine. Eventually in the bus back I got half a bun and some sips of tea from this lady who was there with her child as well to make the taste go away a bit but it was of no use, that taste just came through everything.
Later on during science class when we discussed this I was told it was iodine to protect us from the radiation. It would go into the thyriod. Not sure how it would further help me as I am not a scientist but yeah, that's my memory of this disaster.

Well, that makes him 30 + a possible 12 on top. Since he remembers the event so well, then most likely 35-42
It's a cool story. Wish I experienced Soviet Union. It was so different.

Iodine 131 is a byproduct of nuclear fallout. Iodine naturally accumulates in the thyroid, which is bad in the case of a fallout because it leads to high incidence rates of thyroid cancer. Flooding your system with non-radioactive Iodine essentially prevents the radioactive iodine from accumulating in the thyroid (because the thyroid is already busy with the non-radioactive stuff) and allows the bad iodine to be excreted from your body faster.
scary stuff! good story

Oh well that explains it. Thanks! I didn't see how it would've benefited me but that was a good explanation.
