Michael was on another level of fame that Madonna nor Prince never had during the 80s. But there was room for everyone. Madonna was big, but Whitney was just as big, if not bigger. Whitney's debut and follow up reigned atop the BB200 longer than all FOUR of Madonna's combined studio releases did in the same time frame. Not to mention having 7 consecutive #1 hits.

Janet started the decade as one of the biggest child stars on television. Her first two albums each produced top 10 R&B hits. Then Control happened and she was in the same tier with Whitney and Madonna despite critics deeming it a fluke. First female act to put 5 songs in the top 5 on the Hot 100, and 5 #1s on the R&B chart.

Prince was only big in the 80s with one album, Purple Rain. The album and movie is what helped his fame during that time. Bruce was also a huge act. One of two artists to have an album produce 7 top 10 hits (Janet is in a class of her own so she's not included here). His releases during that time were consistent.

Collectively, these artists defined the mainstream sound of the 80s.

Only die hard Madonna fans know about this. The gp weren't all into it. The last tour Madonna had that really had the gp all interested was Blonde Ambition and that was many years ago. Look, I like Madge but I'm not delusional in thinking she is the last legend from the 80s.
