Is urban becoming the dominant genre/format again???
With MASSIVE single Work topping the Billboard Hot 100 for 9 consecutive weeks, and with Panda most definitely topping the chart next week, is Urban music becoming dominant again??? Keep in mind streaming skews heavily toward urban music (see ANTI, The Life of Pablo, etc.) and digital sales are declining at a rapid pace.
The last time two undeniably urban songs topped the Hot 100 back to back was 8 years ago, when Live Your Life replaced Whatever You Like at #1.
It's the biggest format on Streaming in US, but it's not so dominant yet. Other genres are still shining well.
That just goes to show, that's what's most popular among the last 2-3 generations of music listeners. We've got 11 year old white kids listening to fetty, I mean...
It's weird because even tho sales are not as good, they don't sell that good but oh gawd the way they slay streaming!! The entire apple music top 150 is future, fetty wap, Drake, Kanye and random urban hits.
