Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012.

Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.

The new chapter in the Spider-Man franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.

“A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three Spider-Man films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We’re very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning,” said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

“Working on the Spider-Man movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job,” said Sam Raimi.

“We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade.This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine Spider-Man in anyone else’s hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable,” said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio’s chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise. “Now everything begins anew, and that’s got us all tremendously excited about what comes next. Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can’t wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012.”

"Spider-Man will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures. "We have always believed that story comes first and story guides the direction of these films and as we move onto the next chapter, we will stay true to that principle and will do so with the highest respect for the source material and the fans and moviegoers who deserve nothing but the best when it comes to bringing these stories and characters to life on the big screen."

The studio will have more news about Spider-Man in 2012 in the coming weeks as it prepares for production of the film.

That sux! Ten years after the first film and we'll be getting a reboot! I kinda get where their going though, Tobey is getting too old to be Spidey and Sam woud want more directing opportunities. I just hope the new director has as much passion behind this as Sam did.

Spiderman came out less than 8 years ago.... seriously??? A reboot? This Spiderman franchise was widely successful netting 2.5 billion dollars at the box office alone just on 3 movies. They should have went to 5 and finished it right. Total fail.

They do it all the time, look at the James Bond franchise.

I think they should have continued working on Spider-man 4, replacing tobey if he didn't want to do it. I don't like the idea of starting from scratch again.

They did it with Hulk but Hulk failed, so that make sense.

I would understand if Spider-Man 3 flopped at the box office, but if I recall didn't it do the BEST out of the 3 movies at the Theater? Isn't it in the top 50 of all time movies? Let alone Top 25 of all time?

Just cause Spider-Man 3 was a mess doesn't mean it should be rebooted. It did very well at the theaters, regardless the reviews. This is the worst idea ever. I'm pissed and I'm not going to see the new one.

No one can replace Toby and Kirsten. They are established actors/characters.

Spider Man 3 was the only one that I ACTUALLY watched out of the three.. the first, I watched like 25mins and got bored, the second one, same thing.. I even got the DVD for my bday and didn't even watch the rest.
But, Spider Man 3 we saw like.. the week it came out. And it was amazing. I have no interest in seeing the other two, but Spider Man 3 is one of my fave movies.

But that really ****ing sucks, it is like they are just erasing all the 3 movies. =/

Who wants to see them start all over? Give me a break! Spiderman totally re-energized the "superhero" movies of the 2000s and proved to still be a powerhouse series. This is just too much

They BETTER bring it or it will blow up in their faces. This is really stupid, they already had alot of hype for the 4th film.

The Hulk was a different story, there was only ONE movie and no sequels. Nothing established, very forgettable and yet they brought it back and The Hulk 2008 was AMAZING!

But when you have sequels, why would you do this? What is going through their stupid brains? Fantastic Four for instance, they were going to make a third, but they decided not too and they would reboot the series because of the poor reviews (though I loved the two movies, especially Silver Surfer <3), but once you make a sequel and they are established, it's stupid stupid.

How would you like Harry Potter to rebooted? I say we fight back. I ain't gonna see the movie unless it looks decent, but I ain't going to see it as Spider-Man, I'm seeing it as a "Spin-Off" of Spiderman. Cause no one will replace the real Spiderman cast.

Are they seriously gonna re-boot Fantastic 4 too? WTF is wrong with them? Jessica Alba will ALWAYS be Invisible Woman.

Have they ever thought of actually making BETTER movies to get "better reviews" instead of giving up?
