Voter suppression should not be encouraged.

It is not voter suppression.
There is nothing sinister about having Party members or registered supporters being the ones who decide who the leader of that Party is as opposed to the GP. In the UK, the Labour Party Leader is elected only by the members of the Labour Party. Although I voted Labour in the General Election to decide the Prime Minister, I had no say in who the Labour Party Leader is due to the fact I am not a member of the Labour Party. I am OK with this.
The Party Leader is decided by the Party membership only at the ballot box. This is essentially how a Closed Presidential Primary in the US works. The Party members (registered members of that Party) vote for their leader. Why would you have people who are not Party members have a role in deciding who the Party leader was? It is exactly the same principle of having 'only' US citizens being the only ones able to vote in the US General Election.
US citizens are freely able to change Party affiliations for free. They just need to do the research and find out when the deadline to do this is depending on their locale. If someone doesn't get themselves organised in time, then the fault lies with them and not the system.
