I'm not sure what you mean with high praise though since I don't recall anyone suddenly taking her seriously as an actress after C.R.

Your opinion of the worth of a Golden Globe is pretty irrelevant tbh. They're highly regarded awards in the acting industry and being nominated is a high honour. That straight away debunks your lack of recognition statement.

Her performance in Cadillac Records was praised in every review of the film, several of them calling her the standout performance. If it wasn't such an indie film, it probably would've been more successful on the awards front.

Her acting career didn't take off, but only 3 of her movies grossed under $150 million.

And one of them, her last film, Obsessed made more money in it's opening weekend for the specific week that it was released in all of cinema history (not sure if the record still stands)
