Listening to these old tunes I just wonder. We had an era with MC Lyte, Missy, Brandy, Queen Latifah, Lil Kim, Da Brat, Foxy (plus all the girl groups) and all these amazing women rocking it throughout the 90s.

Why are there so little in the main spotlight these days? I'd love to see more talented ladies see mainstream success and have another Ladies Night for example.

After Nicki debuted, people basically gave up on female rappers. It's like, if that's the best the industry can do, why even continue to bother?

A lot of female rappers back in the day had mutual respect for one another and didn't mind seeing each other succeed. Let's just say that isn't the case with female rappers nowadays.

honestly nicki could have done her part and helped more females come up beside her. instead she shot them down.
the thing about the 90s divas is that they worked together. they united and made plans to release music together and make a point to put more females out there. the same cant be said for todays divas, specifically nicki minaj. shes crafted her fame so that shes the only female out there to be considered queen.

I don't really understand why only Americans can answer? Anyways, there just seems to be less female rappers in general, and perhaps sexism has a play in it, since two females can't be in the same genre of music and both be successful at the same time without people trying to compare the two and act like they're feuding

American majority is always been White and they are the ones that influence the music success in America. There was a time when White people started to get into those Black Women Rappers for whatever reasons. But times have change. I used to love Salt-N-Pepa Queen Latifah and Missy Elliott.

Idk. I feel like it's deffinetly misogyny in society. They were satisfied in having the token female rapper and that's it. They had no interest in having more then 1.

I think rap music has become a lot less popular on the charts in general.

I realize there are still some huge rap hits and certain artists still sell a lot of albums, but it just seems to me like rap and hip-hop in general has slowed down a lot since the 90s and early 00s.

It's already a genre that's more centered on males, so there's less room for a female MC to find success.

everyone you named had something fresh and different about them, and they had the music to back it up. I would love for there to be more female rappers, but A. Banks and Iggy self sabotaged, Dej Loaf ended up being a one hit wonder that couldn't freestyle even though everyone was rooting for her and by the time Tink releases something no one will remember her

if the music is there, the fanbase will be. plus I see a lot of the new rap girls trying there hardest to be Nicki and it's getting them nowhere

Most don't know how to find their own lane in a male dominated genre. After Nicki debuted, many female rappers tried to be just like her but we already had Nicki. Then you have female rappers with potential ruining their careers before they even start. Then the rest are either good rappers with bad music or bad rappers with good music.

I think the problem today is, everytime a new female rapper emerges, she's instantly put against other female rappers. The whole "there can only be one hot female rapper at a time".

While back in the day, they could coexist.
