Plenty of people said this both on and off ATRL. If I recall, both Billboard and HDD questioned her ability maintain her commercial success if she switched genres.
Red did not mark the point at which she departed from country because despite the pop singles, the album as a whole retained her typical folky/country/self-penned content for which she had been known since her debut.
I believe Dollas has some tea on old threads in which plenty of members raised concerns about how she'd do with 1989, that it'd be her "lowest seller," that nobody will be here for "an album of Max Martin," etc., yet now the narrative is "How could she possibly have not smashed with a bunch of generic pop songs?" Hindsight is 20/20, I suppose.
