When I was a child, I used to make believe that ants were people and the sidewalks in front of houses their cities, every sidewalk section had a name and was a metropolis and then I would organize Olympic Games, soccer tournaments, I would have toy cars travel between the cities etc.
I used to catch grasshoppers during recess in kindergarten. I'd tear their wings off and then stick them head first in the fire ant nests on the playground and watch them slowly eat/tear it apart.
