Discussion: What is your definition of modern R&B?

I have noticed that there are endless debates on artists like Rihanna and Ariana if they are actually R&B artists and it seems like all of us have different perception of what R&B is around here. Keep in mind that we are not talking about the traditional one.

Here is one of the most common definitions of the genre that is aproached on other music forums, sites etc

The genre features a distinctive record production style, drum machine-backed rhythms, an occasional saxophone-laced beat to give a jazz feel (mostly common in contemporary R&B songs prior to the year 1995) and a smooth, lush style of vocal arrangement.

Do you agree with this definition? What is your definition of contemporary R&B?

I don't really care too much about genre, but I kind of see R&B as a genre in which there the focus is mostly on the rhythm, vibe, and emotion of a song. I think I would call most Rihanna and Ariana songs as pop R&B because of this. I also don't really see pop as a genre on its own, pop is usually the most accessible form of dance, R&B, Rock, etc.
