Who are the major popgirls?
And what are the requirements to be one?
Thoughts about this seem to be all over the place. People seem to agree Meghan, Lorde and Ariana aren't ones even though they've easily outsold major pop girls recent releases like Rihanna and Britney who's albums haven't even sold gold.
Also, when do we stop considering some major pop girls. Would Mariah still be considered one? I don't know y'all. What do you think?

Yes Mehgan is bigger than Rihanna and Britney because her debut album outsold Rihanna and Britney's eighth.

Being a major popgirl is about your overall stats and longevity so I really don't understand why you're mentioning Britney's and Rihanna's current album sales, both are 8 albums into their careers so it would be embarrassing if the newer artists didn't do better with their debut eras.
Why not compare Lorde's and Meghan's debut (their biggest albums so far) with Britney's debut BOMT or with Rihanna's biggest album GGGB?
Anyway, major popgirls: The Princess of Pop Britney Spears, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé.

Meghan being more of a pop girl than Rihanna.. 
Being a major popgirl isn't just based on the now but past as well.
You have to take in account the artists whole career.
But it's funny how you didn't mention Brit's and Rih's biggest albums/eras.

Major pop girls are generally the A and B+ list. Gaga, Katy, Rihanna, Beyoncé, P!nk, Miley, etc. are major pop girls. Lorde, Ariana, Demi... not so much.
Mariah is in a class of her own. She's a major pop girl because she's a legend, but no one's going to bring up her success compared to today's artists because she hasn't had a major hit this decade.

Let me phrase it a different way: "major pop girls" are pop girls who we still expect to be somewhat culturally relevant in 10 years.

They all are. They're treated as legends, except for J.Lo who is an icon and Janet who doesn't attend many events, every place they go. Have you seen any of today's girls grossing as much as Madonna thirty years into their careers?
