Why do people complain about working in retail?
Everywhere I go be it ATRL, Twitter, or to the retail stores themselves there's always someone complaining about working in retail. But typically people never get into why? I want to hear your experiences with working in one of the most complained-about field.

Although I never did myself, it's pretty obvious why. Working with the public is **** because some people make it a POINT to be rude as hell for no reason. Some people even find it funny to try to get people fired.

For the most part, the complaints are mostly a way of blowing off steam. But the roots of them have to deal with difficult customers (there are far too few great understanding customers in general, it seems) and backroom politics. It's a hassle even at the slowest of times.

No sweets, try working in a nightclub/bar - imagine how irritating and annoying customers are in general, then imagine them EXTREMELY drunk - much worse.
But yeah, i've worked retail before and it is annoying, any job dealing with customers can be.

Tea on this please. I'm in an area where drunken alcoholics are dime a dozen and lord, is it annoying just being around them.

This reminds me of the time my mother gave this probably college kid a hard time because he gave the receipt and did this item thing first but took a bit long to give the money. idk what made her go off like that, there was no harm

Because when you work in retail you can say goodbye to being off work for any holidays, you won't be getting anything in the sales because you will be working them and you will NOT have any steady shifts ever. Its hard and people should consider if they can manage all that and the stress of it all in general before signing a contract
Also practically everyone complains about work and rightfully so. The only job i don't understand people complaining about is teaching, if you don't like kids don't be a teacher? to mention you get like half of the year off and weekends.

Probably because it doesn't pay much. I heard that Zara employees get paid minimum wage.

Because the general public are horrible to deal with. They expect you to prioritise them above everyone, they think the stockroom is some magic room, they even have the audacity to ask for discounts. My job -- I have to try and say hello to every customer who walks in the shop. The way the customers give me some nasty look or don't even give me eye contact ... people are just RUDE. You organise a clothing/shoe rack, just for customers to mess it up right in front of you. People throw stuff on the floor and leave things lying around with no remorse. The worst -- I think -- is when customers are in the store and the store is closed, and they're slowly browsing. It's SELFISH.
And the management/supervisors... Lord.

I worked high-end(ish) retail and (a lot of) the customers were so snobby and rude.

It's not about liking kids or getting holidays. Not to mention they have tons of homework, coursework and mocks to mark. They have to organise lessons, monitor each child's progress yet if the child doesn't progress well, they get the blame. Obviously, teachers don't get enough respect and they're extremely underpaid when you think about what they do (raising the next generation). If you conducted a survey to a group of teenagers with the question: 'worst thing you've ever said to a teacher.' You would probably hear some vile, vile things. I called my English teacher a bitch when I was 14 and I'm so ashamed of myself.

Okay fair enough, I feel the same -- but I don't get that awkward feeling from them, more like, 'I'm not even going to at least glance in your direction.'

Yeah I do not envy nightclub workers. I work in a pretty busy pub, so it's not as bad, but we do get quite a lot of younger drunk people who can get quite annoying. Like some of them try to start fights, or what I found is even more annoying is when they make fun of you and they're in a big group, so everyone joins in - so infuriating also the Middle Aged women can get so nasty when they're off their face Thankfully we have pretty good security so they get kicked out pretty fast

Personally I didn't hate working in retail, I was getting along with everyone but it was annoying to deal with stupid clients, something stupid managers, having to fold after messy and lazy clients, lack of employees, listening to a playlist on loop that sucked most of the time and I think it's also the fact that most of the employees would rather work somewhere else than folding and selling clothes
