I was very disappointed to read this the other day, he's such a well educated and respected man, I've always looked up to him. This was just so out of nowhere.
I think he was hitting a valid point that self-pity isn't a great trait to have, but the way he went about it was completely insensitive and disgusting. There are times when people will self-pity, and for valid reasons. He should have known better.

Exactly. Sometimes it's not what you say, but how you say it. He could've expressed it much better.
