Tipping is far from a scam. If you can't afford to tip then you can't afford to go out to eat.

Yea, I always make sure to leave a good tip at the restaurants because I heard waiters and waitresses make way below minimum wage. But restaurants are slowly getting rid of tipping by increasing the wage. I believe in the future there will no such thing as tipping in the U.S.

No, because it is illegal to pay below the minimum wage ($16.68) here. People don't expect tips, but you can tip if they did a good job I guess.

It's a poor compensation for wages. Restaurants are a tough business because only a small minority can over charge for the food. If your prices are high at face value, it deters people. But having it look affordable and then tipping makes it seem less expensive.

I was a bus boy once and I made 8 dollars an hour. The wait staff made the minimum plus tips. They easily made more money despite my hourly wage being about 4 times more. Then I bussed at a place where the bus boys made like 8 bucks an hour and a small percentage of the tips from all the wait staff etc. That paid pretty well

You still feel pressure to leave at least 10-12% tip if the service was good though.

Tipping is not a scam in the US. I don't know a single person who has ever worked in the service industry and made a server wage of $2 and change/hour who would ever say otherwise.
