Katy isn't popular at the moment (meaning she doesn't have an album or single out) so why would they give her an award? All these shows are popularity contests.

I did think it was a bit fishy that the biggest meme of the year lost to something that wasn't even used as a meme by the GP!

Not sure how them giving this award would imply that it outshone her performance? Surely that would just be further confirmation of how legendary her show was. The same argument could surely be used as "Taylor crying overshadowed the video!!", which shows how silly an argument like that is.

The award wasn't for taylor crying actually, it was for Taylor Swift's "Crazy Girl" which was essentially the purpose of the video

Whereas the shark was just a prop during the show that ended up becoming the most important part.

Because Blank Space is a result of Taylor's artistry while the Left Shark just happened to be something the Internet found funny and didn't have anything to do with Katy at all.
