Movie: Warner to release fewer films after BvS letdown

According to The Hollywood Reporter, following this latest disappointment, Warner Bros. is planning to scale back the amount of films they release in a given year to focus on their core franchises in an effort to improve the success of their release slate.

In 2015, they released an industry-leading 21 movies. Despite that output, they finished the year $800 million behind Universal Pictures in total box-office gross. It was a disappointing year for the studio with expensive flops like Pan, In the Heart of the Sea and Jupiter Ascending. And then came Batman vs. Superman.

Some of you may be quick to defend Batman vs. Superman, which has set some box office records, but as the THR article notes, with Batman and Superman — two of the most iconic characters across any medium — the film won’t cross $1 billion. By comparison, Jurassic World made $1.67 billion. As one THR source notes, “you can’t tell me Batman v. Superman is so much less valuable [than Jurassic World].”

So, what does this mean for the future of the DC Cinematic Universe? The article says that Warner Bros. executives were “shocked” by the scathing reviews and left flat-footed as to how to respond. They mention the growing rumors that a producer (George Miller?) may be added to Justice League to help guide the production (No word, however, on the reshoots that were clearly designed to make Suicide Squad a more humorous movie.) Instead they’ll evaluate what went wrong with Batman vs. Superman and adjust accordingly for Justice League.

If Hollywood put more effort into original scripts rather than throwing $100 million at endless remakes and sequels then maybe these high budget flops would not happen. I have no sympathy for failures in corporate greed and these movies are not art.

I wouldn't be surprised if they end up re-doing Justice League.

They can't really afford another panned film in their ambition for a DCCU.

It was extremely front-loaded and as the article says it will struggle to pass 1 billion. A movie with two most iconic characters the studio has. Now it's definitely not a bomb but it's still a big failure that will bring little profit. No one needs to pay journalists to state the obvious.

DC are taking themselves way too seriously. This is a super hero movie, we know it's not real life.

Both Spider Man and X-Men opened the gate for super hero movies in the early 00s and i noticed how Marvel took a lot more after Sam Raimi's vision of super hero movies that had a little bit of comedy rather than the very serious take of X-Men by Bryan Singer. Proof, Spider Man grossed an average of 800M$ (which was huge back then) compared to X-Men's 400M$.

Given that its Superman AND Batman (one of the most overrated super hero of all time) this should have been the biggest movie released this year. I'm not surprised its barely making any profit.

It made the majority of that in its first weekend and has been limping along since. There is no way WB expected the first movie in history with Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman to gross less than $1 billion. I mean...ZOOTOPIA is looking like it'll finish higher than it, since it still hasn't released in all major countries, while BvS has and is dropping in all of them.

As a massive DC stan, I hope they change things up. The DC universe doesn't this kind of awful treatment. A DC movie universe a la Marvel's would slay, but not like this.

Warner in the past few days have been talking about adding more movies to the slate like a Batman solo film, and Man Of Steel 2. BVS already made back their budget, and like they said they're fine with the 2nd week numbers, and are happy with what's happening with the movie overall.

Given the big portion of box office taken by the theatres, and how a reported $150 million was spent on marketing, it has not made back its budget.

Not everyone has power like the billionaire couple Bey and Jay.
