I had been struggling to keep up that entire season but killing Katherine off was the final straw.
The show was kind of making a return to form with season 6, but then Elena left and it was SO clear that they had no idea where to go without Elena. People might have ragged on her character for like 4 seasons but she was the main character and the focus. Even if you didn't like her, Nina did such a good of anchoring the show with Elena and set up her best enemy and foil in Katherine. Losing Katherine was a hit for the show, but ssn 6 showed that the writers could get past it - as long as they had Elena.
But season 7 has been the perfect example of what happens when a network wants a show to go on longer than it should. Elena's quasi-death should've been the end of the show and they should've done some flashforward scene with Delena finally getting their happy ending. They kept trying to shift focus for ssn 7, talking about how the show has been about Stefan and Damon - yeah their relationship has gotten development but all of it has been in relation to Elena. They were never a compelling enough storyline on their own to carry an entire show.
At this point, they need to realize that the only way to resolve the show is to get Nina back for the ssn 8 finale and having Bonnie die so Delena has their happy reunion. The end.

Anyway I'm glad she's leaving they treat her character like ****! Hopefully she can join The Originals cast at least on that series The witches aren't taken for granted.
I stopped watching this mess after they added those weird flash forwards. Adding Stefan's mother and her "heretics" reviving that random Julian guy was such a weak attempt to recreate the whole Originals storyline.
Those flop new characters, the awfully poor writing plus terrible acting is just too much I can't believe it was even renewed Kat isn't a good actress or a decent singer but she's way better off out of it.
