This is beyond ridiculous. People are constantly looking for racism or a reason to be mad at any and everything. There's nothing racist about that picture. It's just a bad picture. I'm tired of the race card being thrown out for any and everything. I'm surprised there's still some left in the deck at this point.
I wouldn't have seen this as racist. But I'm all for them giving the black girl a better chance to shine, so by all means change the photo. It's an ugly shot anyway.
She's also wearing a t-shirt labeled LOVE. Is that trying to insinuate that POC need love or are unable to provide love?
The girl next to her is wearing a t-shirt labelled ADVENTURE. Is that to insinuate that only white people are adventurous?
It's actually rather funny that someone would fight to make something not-racist instead of just calmly admitting that like most things in America, there is an underlying racism even if it's not in your face. Like, are you that subconsciously self-aware that you need to defend it so bad? It's okay to be white and say, "there is so much about me and what I've been raised as that supports racism." But you need to be aware and empathetic about it.
You could find a quote by that little girl saying, "I wanted her to rest on me. I said it would look really cute so we did it." But what it comes down to is that the Gap released the photo and a photo is a thousand words, but it doesn't tell you what happened behind-the-scenes. So now imagine a young black girl riding the subway seeing this ad. Is she going to have read the mother's tweet? Does she know that another similar reversed picture exists? All she sees is three white girls doing their thing and a black girl being rested on.
That's all I'm going to say here. I am not going to fight people who want to pretend that racism doesn't exist, or who say "yes it exists but there are more important issues than this." Because no one has said this is the issue to end racism.
What in the world?!
Not resting your arm being racist now
You sound white as hell. Stop thinking racism is all in our head. We can see it when it is being shoved in our face and we don't need you to tell us whether its real or not, thanks.

Of course racism is not all in your heads. But this is not racist, nor should it offend anyone.
wow I can't believe they gave the black girls glasses! They are pretty much implying that blacks don't have a vision for their life and future. I'm outraged.
fff not this sounding like something those SJW looking for problems would say
Yea, that picture is definitely inappropriate (as in demeaning to the girl). But when you hear the backstory, that they're sisters, the body language totally makes sense, and I don't find it offensive at all being informed with that. Just change the photo to stop all the fuss, and to be fair do the same where the roles are reversed (the black girl with her arm on the white girl; although she looked full of confidence in comparison to this girl).
