Beyonce has always manipulated an otherwise light and coloratura voice to feign soul singing. She uses an artificial technical grit in place of an authentic one. She lacks rasp, she is spot on in her delivery, and she rarely bends and moves her notes to move the melody. She's a trained soprano. Not a "soul-blues" singer LMAO. She resorts to melismas and growls because she can't emote naturally (as evidenced by her tragic Precious Lord Take My Hand rendition at the Grammys).

And how are her growls any less effective or produced with more effort than singers like Ella, Aretha and Whitney..who typically all used the same "drive" approach for the growl/squal effect..

I wouldn't classify Whitney in the same vocal style as Ella or Aretha tbh. But Whitney and Aretha both use a natural church style of growling, which is very prominent in what influenced soul and blues, as well as the singers that have embodied the style throughout the years. There's a natural body to the voice that Beyonce does not have. Her voice is a lot brighter and lighter. Her growls do not come naturally as she ascends or descends her registers. She employs them on a calculated basis. She sings with her brain, versus her heart.

No one is taking away from Beyonce's actual voice. But for Timber to imply that 90s Mariah lacked depth, soul, and color to her voice in comparison to the "soulful" voice of Beyonce is absolutely ridiculous. That's why I said what I said. Comparatively, Beyonce does not employ soul to the extent that 90s Mariah and ESPECIALLY Aretha, Etta, and Whitney.

" - The size and color of the voice has absolutely NO bearings on the function and the production of a "vocal growl". Karen Clark Sheard..one of Gospel's most famed gospel singers has an EXTREMELY bright, nimble voice that's very "stringy" ..not really large at all, but the way that she EMPLOYS the growl technique makes it a commendable skill and great explosive effect for that type of singing.. it' utilized with a sophisticated tongue placement and the vibration of the aryepiglottic folds vibrating at the same time creating the distinct growl-sound. It take some time really get it..I employ it from time to time in my singing...It's not really stable ..the core support needed is ridiculous lol

I would want Mariah's control... But I prefer the sound and tone of Beyoncé's voice by far. I'm a big Mariah fan, but I always thought the tone and sound of her voice was generic. It was her technique that was out of this world to me, not her voice.
