Game of Thrones has been crowned the most popular show on Twitter.
The Walking Dead might have set the social network alight with its sixth season finale last night, but couldn't compete against the world of Westeros when it came to tweets across January 1-December 31, 2015.
Game of Thrones had 16,463,944 posts to The Walking Dead's 12,125,715.
For the study, Currys PC World looked at the most internationally popular shows across a variety of TV networks, including Netflix and Amazon Prime, and ended up working through 45,000,000 tweets.

Likely explanation around Game of Thrones’ Twitter success comes down to many new viewers watching the show all year round. Game of Thrones is a series well known for its binge watchers, with many new viewers catching up with the entire series throughout the year. That continued viewing, coupled with the shock and awe of many of Game of Thrones’ biggest moments, is likely to go some way in explaining the success of HBO’s fantasy drama, which has beaten The Walking Dead as Twitter’s most talked about TV show.

Game of Thrones will enter its sixth season on April 24 when it airs on HBO. It’s at that point when the show is also likely to enter contention to be 2016’s most talked about show on Twitter. However, with the Walking Dead Season 6 finale airing last night, it’s going to be a tough fight for that spot.
