Discussion: Why is there more Homophobia in the Black community?

I think we can all agree that a big deal of it comes from religious propaganda. I've noticed, in my own experiences, that black men, or most men tbh, are ultra masculine, and anything that deviates from what their religion (i. e. Islam, Christianity) designates as the role of a man is something they vehemently are against. Another thing is, some aspects of their culture in its nature is very mysoginistic, and for a man to act like a woman in any way shape or form, is seen as "less than" or "disgusting". Mind you, a good deal of women hold these convoluted views too.

I think it all links down to religion, not quite sure though?

from what i can gather from the black people I have spoken to over the years, they claim that it stems from a masculinity issue. One woman told me the outlook is that black men feel they have to be "strong" to stand up against oppression, because they face so much discrimination based on their skin color already, that being gay is seen as another "weakness" that affects them as a demographic on the whole.
i guess we can't really blame them. at the end of the day, it all comes back to white people and the horrific things they have done to black people, gay people, and everybody else they considered 'abnormal'. this is all just perpetuating mindsets that white people spread out into the world.

Is that so? Wasn't aware that most of Africa, where homosexual relations lead to a death penalty or life in prison, was governed by white people.

First off, quit grouping a whole race together as if they're one. Second, other races have just as many homophobic people.

Meanwhile, anti-gay laws are STILL being put forth in the US, so I'd say his point still stands. If anything, it proves that homophobia isn't just a "black community" problem, when you have multitudes of white politicians in the US trying to get rid of gays too. It's a world problem.
But let's keep calling out the black and latino communities for being homophobic, while ignoring the communities who make all the laws in the US.

I think this definitely plays a role, there's also an aversion to being a "double minority" in a sense

Basically came to say this. I feel like some of the homophobes in the black community see the gays as "taking away" from the "strength" of their race. Which is why I feel as if they're more strongly opposed towards black gays than white gays.

It's a very religious community which is understandable given the centuries of mistreatment, discrimination and oppression they've faced throughout the years. They had to band around something. Sad though.

Not really, it gets old when every time homophobia is brought up it's almost always "why are blacks insert problem here" it's not to say there aren't issues but they're not the only ones with them.
Like the incident at the BBQ place in NYC due to his assumed race he was automatically the bad guy despite the white guy lying about the events.
There are issues on both fronts of this discussion.

You guys have to read "We Real Cool" by Bell Hooks. I love gender studies and this book is about black men and masculinity, which I think plays a huge role in the homophobia in black culture. In the book, she discusses more history and how, as some posts are already stating, there were issues in America from how whites viewed blacks (women and men). The stronger and strict the gender roles, the more likely you are to find a change in sexual orientation a deviation from those roles. How can a female be feminine enough if she is not catering to the male gaze? How can a man be masculine enough if he is not powerful and providing for the family?
