An autopsy was scheduled Sunday for a 9-year-old New Jersey boy who was fatally stabbed in Manhattan.
Police say 25-year-old Alejandro Morales stabbed his nine-year-old cousin, Anthony Maldonado, over a video game. Morales was placed under arrest at the 26th Precinct station-house, but that is no consolation to the young boy's mother.
Maldonado's mother, Dolores Juela, is heartbroken and confused, unable to make sense of the shocking stabbing death of her son.
"I said,
'what happened to Anthony?'" Juela said between tears.
"They said, 'he died.'"
Police say that, around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Maldonado was with his cousin in a sixth-floor apartment in Harlem's Grant Houses. Investigators say the fourth grader was playing video games on his new PlayStation when Morales began stabbing the boy in the chest.
Maldonado staggered over to his uncle's bedroom door, crying out that he had been stabbed. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital, but it was too late. He died at a hospital about an hour later.
"That's crazy, that's awful – that's my thoughts," neighbor Denise Thomas said.
"I'm wondering, how did this happen, a nine-year-old boy?"
Maldonado lives in Palisades Park, New Jersey, and was just visiting relatives in Harlem for the holiday. His PlayStation was a Christmas gift. Juela says he was always a grateful child, and very loving.
"Always, he told me, 'I love you Mommy, I love you,'" she said.
