Michael Sam on racism in gay community
Quote:
Michael Sam might have faced a backlash from middle America when he came out to a frenzy of media interest in 2014 [...] the American football star reveals how shocked he was to be confronted with racism from within the gay community itself after taking the plunge publicly.
“I will say this, since I came out, I did not realise how much racism there actually is in the gay community,” he tells us.
“It’s terrible. People have told me I’m not gay enough, people have told me I’m not black enough. I don’t know what that means. You want to be accepted by other people but you don’t even accept someone just because of the colour of their skin? I just don’t understand that at all.”
The former NFL star continues: “How are you saying that, ‘oh, I want people to accept me because I’m gay but I don’t accept you because you’re black, or because you’re white or because you’re Asian’. I don’t understand that.
“It baffles me how screwed up society is. Because where I’m from. we don’t judge a person by the colour of their skin, we judge them by the character of their heart.
“There are a lot of people whose hearts are cold and that’s sad. ”

The amount of times I've heard that "You're not gay enough, you're a fake gay" e.t.c but then fume when there is a masc gay saying it's a put on .. like .. :s
Also I agree there is a lot of racism in the community

My boyfriend sometimes is slated for not being gay enough, too. I've abandoned the community because it's a load of bitchy people that sleep with each other.
Not sure about the racism, however. I've not heard much about that, but it isn't shocking nonoftheless.

Now, if the US-based gay publications would please tackle this prevalent issue.

I can't judge the US situation since I'm not American, but for sure there are those kind of problems in every gay community, in my experience I can say that I saw a lot of discrimination towards feminine boys, masculine gays (in a lot of cases only in the appearance) think to be superior, and it's the same when it comes to physycal standards (muscles, slim, fat, ecc.)
I think it's true that often, the gays themselves are the first not supportive with each other for superficial things.

I'm white and in an area full of white gays. It's amazing the racist things they'll spew in front of me because they assume everyone is as racist as they are.
And the amount of times I've heard them remark on black men, "he's black but he's still really hot"

this + I think asians usually have it even more difficult than blacks when it comes to racism in the gay community. It's kinda sad how often I already had to read "no Asian" on Grindr or other dating apps.

What do they mean by "not gay enough"? Do we have to be flamboyant or be bottoms or what according to them?

#gaymediasowhite took over twitter the other night. They dragged magazines like OUT and the Advocate that literally only feature shirtless white men. Black and Latino gays get no love meanwhile everyone here and on TV use the lingo they started. Words like shade, read, drag, queen, are all products of them. It's a shame that they don't get more recognition. They are only featured when it's something negative. And don't get me started on the blatantly racists that write "no blacks" "asians" "latino" or "white only" on their profile then claim it's just their preference.

It's true. And shame on any white gay person rubbishing his claims. You don't know and haven't lived through it.
I know because I have educated myself on the issue and have friends who have told me about their experiences. Maybe you should do the same.
