They can't take the dog from him when it's dead. The hell you want them to do? Leave his ass alone for starving his dog to death?
It's not an either or situation you know, you can care about people torturing and killing animals and humans at the same time. He should have got more time in jail, and people shouldn't get away with murdering other human beings either.
. I seriously hope he gets violently raped in jail until his large intestine is hanging loose from his asshole. Which isn't far off from what happens to animal abusers and child molesters in prison.
