LOS ANGELES (CN) - Pop singer Brandy sued her record label for $1 million Tuesday, claiming it refuses to let her record or release an album, to "bully" her into signing a contract that will let Chameleon Entertainment double dip at her expense.
Brandy Norwood sued New York-based Chameleon Entertainment and its owner-CEO Breyon Prescott in Superior Court.
She claims Prescott, who also works for Epic Records, is trying to double dip: force her to sign with Epic and release her records through Chameleon, so he can profit twice.
She demands $1 million in compensatory damages, plus punitive damages, for intentional interference with contract, interference with business relations, and business law violations.
Big artists like her should just go independent tbh. Why do they even deal with these labels anymore? They've already got the fan numbers. With a little hard work and a well thought out marketing plan, they could easily release their own music without the need for a label to (not) promote it and hold things up. Unfortunately, labels are still kind of necessary, especially for artists of Brandy's generation who didn't create their careers on social media. Tamia said it best. The label is kind of like a rich uncle. I can't even imagine the slayage if there was a label properly launching and pushing Beggin & Pleadin, one of the best songs of the year.

This. Labels still are the gatekeepers to radio play, TV perfromances (SNL, Jimmy Fallown) award show performances, and even some top tier producers. Hard to get any major recognition without those avenues.
