Eternal -- as in, duration -- suffering has never made much sense to me either. Personally I ascribe to the ideology of "eternal" as possession, not time; if God is "eternal," then "eternal" punishment is just ~his~ punishment. And since one of God's traits is "just," such is his punishment.
Thus the whole motif of "fire and brimstone" is really just metaphorical for the kind of torment people will go through -- hot, intense, painful -- but it wouldn't necessarily last forever. If a God teaches concepts of love, turning the other cheek, forgiveness, it only makes sense for him to personify these values and in turn deal out judgement and justice in accordance with them. Suffering that lasts forever wouldn't be his style.
