Pokkén Tournament has been met with a positive start in Japan, with launch weekend sales seeing the Wii U exclusive sell 69,675 copies. But, the gloves are off.
It has seen Bandai Namco Entertainment’s Pokémon brawler already outpace Capcom’s Street Fighter 5. That’s according to Media Create, whose weekly sales data last saw Street Fighter 5 chart a fortnight ago when lifetime sales sat at 59,553 copies.
In the weeks that have followed it has since fallen out of the chart, but we can use how many copies the lowest charting games have sold as a guideline in relation to how it has continued to sell. That saw Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire shifting 4,088 copies between 7th – 13th March, and SEGA’s Yakuza 0 selling 4,257 copies this past week. As a best case scenario, that would see Capcom’s fighter sat at below 68,000 copies.
In one week! I know Pokken has a long way to go before eclipsing Street Fighter, but does it seem to pose a dangerous (woman) threat to SF's title?
i wish they would add more characters. Only 16 characters, seriously
But they're all incredibly solid. It's a first entry in a series and it's not like Super Smash Bros where they have a limited moveset. I'd rather have 16 solid characters than 30 mediocre ones
Plus, I'm sure we'll get DLC that'll help fund the sequel for the NX

I'm pretty sure they've already said they have no plans for any Pokken DLC

Yet. They also said that about Hyrule Warriors and some other games. That way they can argue that they never planned for DLC so as to look like they didn't cheat the consumers. Plus, Pokken was looking like an early flop (it was doing poorly in arcades, where gameplay lasted too long so people were paying like $1 for an hour) and it's pulled itself up. That's what makes these numbers so incredible, especially for a fighting game.
